Thomas wrote his Facebook friends that he will be speaking Sunday, July 3, at the 11 a.m. service of Covenant United Methodist Church, where he has been music director. He wrote about how the children sent off their departing pastor. Earlier in the day, he explained at the Tuesday Morning Breakfast Forum the full message behind his July 3 talk.
“I am delivering the message at Covenant United Methodist Church, 6824 Tuckaseegee Road) this Sunday at 11. Come if you can. Last Sunday our pastor, Rev. Dr. Fredrick Bowman, was surprised when instead of lining up to sing, the children’s choir rushed over to give him a group hug. Earlier, in our morning rehearsal, after the children shared what we liked about him, we came up with the “group hug” idea. We rehearsed it with me as the pastor. During the service, as rehearsed, the oldest child spoke with enthusiasm, ‘one, two, three’ and the children shouted, ‘We Love You!’ Our pastor was surprised and moved to tears. We are thankful for his faithful leadership during his last week of ministry to our church which included delivering the eulogy at the Celebration of Life service of his grandson, Kahmal W. Darby, on the day before. God bless you, Rev. Dr. Fredrick Bowman.”
