How children become better readers

“If children are to become better readers they need to be introduced to more reading-related activities. Here are examples:

“Stories read to them by parents and teachers and other caregivers.

“Books authored and/or illustrated by people who look like them.

“Seeing the names of children written on cubbies, etc.

“Opportunities for children to scribble and/or use inventive spelling.

Head Start has been a way to create some of those opportunities for young children. I have other ideas in the articles I have written for Head Start. They’re on my website.”
